This’s year’s registration system is much simpler than previous years. There’s no need to sign up, just fill in your project details and you’re done. But please take care to double-check your name and other details are spelt correctly, before you submit the registration form.
Congratulations to our Premier Winner Chris Ryan, from Howick College, who has been selected to attend Realise the Dream.
He submitted his project “Kawakawa Demonstrates Anti-inflammatory Activity “ about the medicinal properties of the Kawakawa plant.
Realise the Dream is a prestigious national event which rewards and celebrates 20 secondary school students who have undertaken an excellent piece of science research, technology or an electronics/robotic/computer science project.
Students who are selected for Realise the Dream are rewarded with an all-expenses paid week-long trip to attend the event. Realise the Dream starts in Auckland on 8 December and then travels down through the North Island finishing in Wellington where an awards function will take place at Government House. There are some huge prizes that are announced at the awards evening which include cash scholarships and international travel.
The trip will involve visiting science institutions where they will be hosted by organizations such as the Liggins Institute, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare; Dairy NZ, AgResearch, Massey University and NIWA. The students will also be involved in various team building challenges and social events.
The Royal Society is indeed grateful of the support of Genesis Energy (the principal sponsor) and DairyNZ and the New Zealand Commission for UNESCO who also sponsor the event. The Royal Society would also like to thank the many science organizations who host the students and prepare workshops for them during the week.
More information about Realise the Dream can be found at www.realisethedream.org.nz
The 2013 prizegiving ceremony was held on 28th August 2013. It was an enjoyable evening celebrating the success of young scientists.
The Premier Award of the Fair was won Chris Ryan, from Howick College, for “Kawakawa Demonstrates Anti-inflammatory Activity”
In traditional Maori medicine (rongoa) Kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum) is considered to be one of the most potent medicinal herbs. However, previous screening studies have indicated that Kawakawa had very little anti-bacterial and no anti-viral activity. The study sought to explain the disparity between the anecdotal evidence from rongoa and the scientific evidence available. The study demonstrates evidence that suggests Kawakawa has in-vitro anti-inflammatory activity through positive activity in several inflammatory markers. The judges thought Chris’s project has great value from an ethnic, health and commercial perspective
The Eric Clague Award (Second in Fair) was won by Tatiana Tataurangi-Ruru, from Alfriston College, for “Who’s that Hooting at You?” An investigation into the bahavioural patterns of Siamang Gibbons.
Judging has finished for the 2013 Fair. Thanks to all those who participated. A big thank you also to our judges, who have come from many specialist areas relating to science and technology, and given up their time to assist to make the day a success.
Prize winners will be notified by email within a couple of days. Details will be included relating to the prize giving ceremony.
Registrations have now closed for the 2013 Fair.

NIWA has become the premier sponsor of the NIWA Manukau Region Science and Technology Fair.
NIWA has a history of sponsoring a number of regional science fairs in New Zealand. Their long-term commitment to enhancing science and technology for young New Zealanders fits well with the ethos and goals of our region’s Science and Technology Fair.
We are thus very happy to begin this partnership with NIWA in 2013. We are looking forward to a long relationship as we seek to build on the solid heritage of the Science and Technology Fair in the Manukau Region.
